Plain cement concrete has quite little tensile strength, which restricts its constructional and architectural applications. To increase its tensile capacity, reinforcement is put in place, generally with the help of steel bars known for providing substantial tensile strength. Properties Of Reinforced Cement Concrete

Simple concrete i.e. Plain cement concrete has very low tensile strength. So, for improving the tensile strength of concrete, some sort of reinforcement is provided which will bear the tensile stresses produced in the structure. Mostly, Steel bars are used as tensile reinforcement because, it is strong in tension and the thermal expansion of concrete and steel is quite similar resulting in good bond between them.

In reinforced cement concrete (R.C.C.), reinforcing steel bars are prudently positioned inside concrete forms. Then, fresh concrete is poured around them to produce a unified composite material. This solidified combination, called R.C.C., appropriately combines concrete and steel reinforcement to fabricate a material with superlative properties of both compression and tension. The steel bars, usually situated in the tensile zones of the structure, soak up and cushion tensile forces not possible by concrete alone.
